The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking to fill its Solution Technologist (Information Technology Specialist 3) position within its Information Technology Solutions Bureau Systems and Solutions Team.
Organization BackgroundThe mission of DPS is to serve the people of Iowa by providing public safety services with leadership, integrity and professionalism through the core values of courtesy, service and protection.
The Department is a statewide law enforcement agency and includes the Administrative Services Division, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Iowa State Fire Marshal and the Division of Intelligence.
The Department works in conjunction with federal, state and local jurisdictions of the criminal justice community to provide for the safety of persons living in, or traveling through the State of Iowa.
The Information Technology Solutions Bureau (ITSB) is responsible for maintaining the computer hardware, data and telecommunication infrastructure for the Iowa Department of Public Safety along with the oversight and operation of the Iowa Criminal Justice Information Network, known as the IOWA System.
The ITSB includes the Development Team, Audit/ Certification/ Training (ACT) Team, Systems and Security Team, and the Solutions Team which provides help desk support, information technology products and services purchasing authority, mobile device management, and level one technical support throughout the Department's domain network's user community.

oResponds to the Help Desk phone line and email account to assist users with the various appliances and applications deployed by the Information Technology Solutions Bureau (ITSB); maintains technical proficiency on all said appliances and applications.
oAssists users with network logon problems.
oAs assigned, takes standby and on-call duty after normal business hours to provide support.
oElevates issues to additional resources within ITSB when needed.
oUtilizes ITSB's Information Technology Operations Center trouble ticket tracking application for all help desk support actions.
PERSONAL COMPUTER DEPLOYMENT AND SUPPORToConfigures new PCs and re-images PCs after hardware repairs have been completed, as needed.
oFollows prescribed procedures for consistency throughout installations.
oSuggests changes to the procedure to promote further efficiencies to take advantage of new technologies or due to changes in software or hardware.
PERSONAL COMPUTER MANAGEMENT SUPPORToManages PC desktop, laptop and tablet computers.
oAssists with managing patches for keeping PCs current with security updates, hot fixes, critical and recommended updates, and service packs.
oWrites and troubleshoots installation packages and scripts for software deployment.
NETWORK FUNCTIONS SUPPORToCompletes user makes, moves, renames and deletes on the network as approved by users' supervisors.
oConfigures and installs network equipment including routers, firewalls, switches and wireless access points.
oConfigures and installs networked and local printers and scanners.
oChecks system backups for completion and notifies additional resources of issues needing resolution.
oAssists Iowa Communication Network with IOWA System customers having router, line or configuration issues.
oManages vendors as needed to take corrective actions.

Selectives 071 Applications Support6 months' experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in the installation, repairing, and overseeing of computer hardware/software/or peripheral equipment.
This also involves answering user inquiries on computer hardware and software operation.
AND169 Help Desk Support6 months' experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in assisting users with step-by-step detailed instructions of procedures to resolve the users' issue.
Requires a good technical proficiency in the area being supported.
AND959 Computer System Operations6 months' experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in operating a computer system hardware installation and related peripheral equipment; serves as a contact point for resolution of customer problems involved with system operation.
Minimum Qualification Requirements Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in:
operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; or designing/administering websites.
2) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in computer science, computer applications, software engineering, computer engineering, management information systems, business analytics, or cyber security.
3) All of the following (a and b):
a.
One year of full-time work experience in:
operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; or designing/administering websites; and b.
A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
4) All of the following (a and b):
a.
One year of full-time work experience in:
operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; designing/administering websites; or executing technology projects (e.
g.
, systems analysis, requirements, design, development, and testing); and b.
Either of the following:
i.
Certification by an authorized educational institution/major computer or software producer in an area directly related to one of the computer specialty fields described in part a; or ii.
Eighteen semester hours of accredited post-high-school coursework in one of the specialty fields described in part a.
5) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as an Information Technology Specialist 2.
